Two TWAIN devices on one workstation Problem: When two TWAIN devices are installed on one computer, the one installed last will launch only. (Windows XP) Description: In Windows XP Microsoft has chosen to emphasize WIA (Windows Image Acquisition) instead of TWAIN. Microsoft encapsulates TWAIN within WIA. This is a new specification and eliminates the direct access to TWAIN devices through the “normal” TWAIN means. Microsoft acknowledges that this can cause problems with some devices and programs. It appears to be a problem only when the devices are installed using the full software installation from CD. Windows will always choose WIA vs. TWAIN given the choice and if an automatic installation is chosen then the odds are good that the device will be marked as a WIA device. A sure sign that the device HAS been marked as WIA is if it appears in the Scanners and Imaging Devices tab. Solution: Devices should be installed with the minimum software needed to be a TWAIN device. In the case of the BizCardReader, this means not using the CD provided with the device, but rather the diskette that Compulink provides. The latest drivers can be downloaded from http://www.compulink-support.com/downloads.htm If the user chooses to insert the CD, they should cancel the installation of the main software. The USB cable should be inserted and when asked for installation, choose the non-automatic choice, and have Windows search the diskette (if using the diskette) or the CD (if using the CD). The user will be told that the driver is not digitally signed, but they should proceed anyway. After the installation is complete, they should go into Compulink, set up the Workstation and test a card. Then they should install the second device. This appears to be the optimal method to use. In the case of the Logitech Camera, the user should NOT install all the additional software that come on the CD. With the camera unplugged they should insert the CD and install only the minimum needed software, the Image Studio. Do NOT install the movie maker, and the other software. The computer asks for a reboot, and after the reboot, asks for the camera to be plugged in. After installation is complete, update the Workstation in Compulink and test. Problem Correction: In the case where the problem already exists, it is necessary to remove all of the image acquisition software, then reinstall using the method described above. To remove software, go to Control Panel, Add and Remove Programs and remove all programs associated with the affected devices. With the devices still plugged in, then go to Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, System, Hardware Tab, Device Manager. Under Imaging devices, right click and uninstall. Immediately after uninstalling a device, unplug it from the USB port so that XP doesn’t reinstall it. When all devices are uninstalled, reboot, and proceed with proper installation.
