The local device name is already in use (HW172)

Symptom

When attempting to log into Advantage, the error message displayed is:

"The local device name is already in use"

Cause

Someone else on your network is using the same name for their computer.

Solution

WIN95/98

  1. Select Start->Run
  2. Type in Control and press Enter
  3. Double-click Network icon
  4. Click on the Identification tab
  5. Fill in the Computer Name: field with some unique name you wish to identify your computer with.

Win 2000

  1. Select Start->Run
  2. Type in Control and press Enter
  3. Double-click System icon
  4. Click on the Network Identification tab
  5. Click the Properties button
  6. The "Identification Changes" window is displayed
  7. Fill in the Computer Name: field with some unique name you wish to identify your computer with.

WIN XP

  1. Select Start->Control Panel
  2. If the view does not display the classical Control Panel icon view, then click Switch to Classic View under the heading labeled "Control Panel" on the right-side of the window (towards the top).
  3. Double-click the System icon
  4. Click on Computer Name
  5. Fill in the Computer Description: field with some unique name you wish to identify your computer with.
